About Me
Oxford-educated • PhD Physics • Chartered Scientist & Engineer
I’m passionate about helping young people discover that maths and physics aren’t scary subjects – they’re actually fascinating! With over a decade of experience in research and education, I love showing students how the concepts they’re learning in class connect to the amazing world around us.
I was a Research Fellow at the University of Bristol, where I led exciting projects worth millions of pounds. But what I enjoy most is that “lightbulb moment” when a student suddenly gets it – whether that’s understanding quadratic equations or grasping how waves work.
I studied Materials Science at Oxford, completed my PhD in Physics at Bristol, and I’m both a Chartered Scientist and Chartered Engineer. But more importantly, I remember what it was like to struggle with difficult concepts, and I know how to break them down into manageable, understandable pieces.

How I Can Help Your Child
GCSE Maths & Physics
I help students achieve the grades they need by combining solid understanding with proven exam strategies. My approach focuses on:
- Grade Improvement Plans – targeted work on areas that will have the biggest impact on results
- Exam Technique Mastery – learning how to read questions, manage time, and maximize marks
- Past Paper Practice – extensive work with real exam questions and mark schemes
- Stress Management – building confidence so students perform at their best under pressure
- Making abstract concepts concrete with real-world examples
A-Level Maths & Physics
A-Levels require sophisticated exam strategies alongside deep understanding. I help students master:
- Advanced Problem-Solving Techniques – systematic approaches to complex multi-part questions
- Mark Scheme Analysis – understanding exactly what examiners want to see
- Grade Boundaries Strategy – focusing effort where it counts most for your target grade
- Revision Planning – structured approaches that maximize retention and performance
- Practical Skills – lab techniques and data analysis for coursework and practical exams
University Applications & Oxbridge Prep
Having been through Oxford myself and now working at Bristol, I understand what universities really look for:
- Personal Statement Help: We’ll craft a compelling story that shows your child’s passion
- Interview Preparation: Practice sessions to build confidence and communication skills
- Course Selection: Honest advice about different programmes and what to expect
- Oxbridge Applications: Inside knowledge of what these prestigious universities want to see

My Teaching Experience
University-Level Teaching
I taught postgraduate students at the University of Bristol:
- MSc Nuclear Science: Teaching radiation detection and nuclear decommissioning to future engineers
- PhD Supervision: Mentoring doctoral students conducting cutting-edge research
- International Training: I’ve developed specialized technical programmes for engineering professionals
Why This Matters for Your Child
This experience means I bring cutting-edge knowledge to every session, whether we’re working on GCSE equations or A-Level physics. I know how to explain complex ideas clearly because I did it with university students at the highest level!
What Makes My Approach Different?
Real-World Connections
I don’t just teach theory – I show students how maths and physics work in practice. When we’re learning about radiation, I can show photos from my nuclear research lab. When we’re studying materials, I can explain how I use these principles in million-pound projects.
Patient and Encouraging
Every student learns differently, and I adapt my teaching style to suit each individual. Some students are visual learners, others prefer hands-on examples, and some need to talk through problems. I’ll find what works best for your child.
Building Confidence
My goal isn’t just better grades (though they usually follow!) – it’s helping students develop confidence in their problem-solving abilities and curiosity about the world around them.
Parent Communication
I keep parents informed about progress and provide suggestions for how you can support your child’s learning at home.
Safeguarding & Peace of Mind
As a parent myself and a School Governor, I understand how important your child’s safety and wellbeing are. I’m fully committed to providing a safe, professional learning environment.
My Safeguarding Credentials:
- Enhanced DBS Certificate – fully up to date and available to share with parents
- School Governor Experience – familiar with safeguarding policies and best practices
- Professional Standards – I maintain the highest standards of conduct in all my interactions with students
I’m happy to discuss my safeguarding approach and share my DBS certificate with any parent before we begin tutoring. Your child’s safety and your peace of mind are my top priorities.
A Bit More About Me
When I’m not tutoring or conducting research, I’m:
- Chair of the West of England Materials & Mining Association
- A School Governor – I’m committed to education in our community
- Contributor to BBC Radio explaining science to the public
- Winner of international awards for my research innovations
I live locally in Nailsea and understand the pressures that students and families face. I’m here to support not just your child’s academic success, but their confidence and curiosity too.
